Hi! How are you?
It feels like forever ago, I’ve not been writing so much lately, and when I say not so much, I mean not at all in fact.
That’s mainly because I’ve started a Youtube channel and just getting the hang of it all has taken up a lot of time.
It’s that classic thing of when you decide to start something new you never fully anticipate how much work it actually takes. It’s sticky, frustrating as hell and often takes much longer to acquire the skills and make all those millions of new decisions about banner images and fonts and intro music and whatnot.
There’s a few discoveries that have brought me joy and more insight to this whole “sharing stuff online” category (and how sharing video is different than photos), and I thought I’d share those with you :)
Maybe, if you’re thinking about starting something new, this will spark some inspiration.
1. BEING GOOFY
On YouTube it’s ok to be goofy, the more the better it would actually seem. And it feels so good to unleash the inner goof ball in me in full 3D. Well, techinaccly it’s still only 2D but it feels more dynamic and vibrant somehow.
I really enjoy jumping around and putting energy into my body while doing my videos, it feels good to be physical and enjoy interacting with the world around me.
2. TALKING ABOUT STUFF MORE IN DEPTH
I don’t inherently feel like writing is my most natural medium, I often struggle to find the right words to express myself. So, being able to talk and actually hear my thoughts out loud while I say them has been a nice way to reflect and get some conversations going that can go a bit deeper than your standard Instagram caption.
3. EDITING SCHMEDITING BONANZA
Oh my, this is probably one of the most enjoyable parts of this whole new YouTube venture, the editing part. Oooh mama!
The control freak part of me just purrs with delight when I get to tweak the rhythm and pace of my clips, and learning about visual storytellling by combining clips together.
I’m still such a newbie, but now I remember why I loved doing all our videos from family trips as a teenager, there is definitely a little filmmaker alter ego inside of me that is loving this.
4. TALKING ABOUT MY TRUE LOVE, STYLE
I’ve always cared a lot about what I wear and enjoyed using that as a way to express myself. But, for some reason I’ve never really allowed myself to focus on style or clothes as my area of “expertise” on social media.
I mean, yes I did start out on Instagram to sell my knitwear that I made at the time, but since ending that I’ve just never really focused on it.
I think I might have a fear of judgement and people comparing me to other more established fashionistas out there, and maybe a fear of seeming vain or superficial? Or a fear of re-inforcing the whole “woman on the internet talking about appearances” stereotype.
But then again, if that is something I truly enjoy and that gets me inspired, why am I denying myself the exploration of it just because of the fear of what others might think? That sucks.
Especially since, my experience so far has shown me, that people are actually extremely supportive and it’s usually my own over-thinking and over demanding self that is holding me back.
5. A BLANK SLATE
Lastly, the thing I looove about starting on a new platform, it gives me a completely blank slate.
I’m not a huge Instagrammer, but I still have that inevitable feeling of trying to align and “serve” my community with the content they’ve signed up for.
I try to always stay true to my own artistic curiosities and go where the journey takes me. But, when you have a bit of an audience its really hard to take big creative risks. You feel you want to protect what you’ve already built and not go to crazy with the experimenting extravaganzas, especially when it’s also what bring the food on the table.
Anyways, YouTube for me is such a nice new experience because I feel I have the freedom to really try out new stuff, discover new hidden passions and topics without too much pressure of having it “perform” well. For now, I can just be my goofy old self over there :)
Ok, that’s all I have for now! Thanks for the chat!
